“Every time I chat with a customer and hear how much they enjoy the space, it reminds me why we created it. It is the place I always wished existed when my children were younger.”
– Ana, Co-Founder, Utopia Café & Play
Creating a Space for Families to Connect
When Ana and David approached Four Little Pigs, they had a clear vision: to create the kind of family space they wished had existed when their own children were younger. A place where parents could enjoy great coffee and quality food while their children played safely nearby.
Located in the suburbs of Edmonton, Canada, Utopia Café & Play is designed specifically for children aged 0–6 years. The concept combines a boutique café experience with an engaging play environment, allowing families to relax, work, socialise and play together in one thoughtfully designed space.
The Brief
The challenge was to create a welcoming destination that balanced several key priorities:
- A safe and stimulating play environment for young children
- Clear sightlines so parents could always see their children
- Comfortable seating integrated within the play space
- A stylish café atmosphere that felt elevated and inviting
- Flexible areas for working parents with a lot of plugs to stay connected!
- A design that could be delivered within budget
Working closely with Ana and David, we developed a concept that brought together creativity and practicality while remaining achievable for local contractors and makers.
Bringing the Vision to Life
Our design incorporated bespoke play features, natural materials and carefully considered zoning to create a seamless experience for both children and adults.
Many of the elements were built locally using our design package, with Ana and David overseeing the implementation alongside local craftsmen and family members. This collaborative approach ensured the original vision was maintained while keeping the project practical and cost effective.
The result is a beautifully balanced environment where café seating sits naturally alongside the play experience. Parents can enjoy a coffee, catch up with friends or even work remotely while remaining connected to their children.
Additional features include:
- Integrated parent seating within the play area
- Charging stations and electrical outlets for remote working
- Private booths for calls and meetings
- Age-appropriate play spaces designed for children aged 0–6 with a clear visibility for parents
- Thoughtful layouts that prioritise supervision and safety
More Than a Café
Since opening, Utopia has become much more than a play café.
From day one, families have commented on the design of the space. Visitors often remark on how beautiful and welcoming Utopia feels when they first walk in, with the thoughtfully designed interiors, calming aesthetic and carefully considered layout creating a memorable first impression. The unique combination of a boutique café atmosphere and an engaging children’s play space helps set Utopia apart from traditional indoor play venues, creating an environment where both parents and children immediately feel at ease.
As Ana explains, the concept was inspired by her own experiences as a mother:
“I got the idea of this place based on my own personal experience as a mum. Being able to provide that same experience to other people, and create the space I wish I had when my children were younger, is incredibly rewarding.”
The venue has quickly become a community hub where families gather for play dates, classes, events and everyday moments together.
Parents regularly comment on the unique balance Utopia offers. Children are free to explore and play, while adults can relax, enjoy high-quality food and coffee, and genuinely enjoy their own time too.
“It has that great in-between where you get to sit down and eat while your kids can play. You both get the best of both worlds.”
A Design That Continues to Deliver
One of the most rewarding aspects of this project has been seeing how deeply the space has become woven into the local community.
Ana’s own children use and enjoy the space regularly, and the café has become a destination for families throughout Edmonton. Even through seasonal changes, the venue has provided an important indoor environment where children can play freely and parents can connect with others.
The success of Utopia Café & Play demonstrates the power of thoughtful design. By carefully considering the needs of both children and adults, we helped create a space that is not only beautiful but genuinely improves everyday family life.
The Result
Today, Utopia Café & Play stands as a thriving family destination that combines play, work, food and community under one roof.
For Four Little Pigs, it perfectly reflects what we love to create: spaces that are imaginative, practical and designed around the real needs of modern families.
